MAREPS

Have you ever gone out on your boat and noticed that the depth under the keel was less or more that what was indicated on the chart?  Have you ever gone out on your boat and noticed that a navigation marker was out of position or missing?

As responsible boaters, we ask that you log the situation and then send us the information so that we can verify the problem and file a MAREP Report with Canadian Hydrographic Services.

WARNING

The following US Coast Guard publication “A BOATER’S GUIDE TO THE FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR RECREATIONAL BOATS AND SAFETY TIPS” is on the internet at the following URL:  http://www.uscgboating.org/images/420.PDF.

Ever since 9-11 and the attack on the USS Cole in Aden in 2000, the US Navy has been a litt-tt-le twitchy about vessels coming too close to their ships.

The above publication points out the following

Naval Vessel Protection Zones   Do not approach within 100 yards, and slow to minimum speed within 500 yards, of any U .S. Naval vessel.  If you need to approach within 100 yards in order to ensure a safe passage in accordance with the Navigation Rules, you must contact the U.S. Naval vessel or the U.S. Coast Guard escort vessel on your VHF radio (Channel 16) for authorization.  If a Naval vessel is passing near where you are operating your boat, you may be asked to move your vessel to maintain the 100-yard distance.  The U.S. Coast Guard will make an announcement ahead of time to alert boaters in the area.  Violations of the Naval Vessel Protection Zone are a felony offense, punishable by up to 6 years in prison and/or up to $250,000 in fines.  Be aware that both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard are authorized to use deadly force to protect themselves.
